BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) – The fourth annual Blocktober Fest Halloween brought hundreds of people to the Monticello area on October 31st.
The event was started by Councilor Daryl Hurst after he said he realized door-to-door trick-or-treating was less safe when not everyone was participating. Councilor Hirst also said it helps bring more people into the community.
“To bring people here who haven’t been in this part of town for a long time to tell them this is a community I want to be a part of,” Hurst says. “We have food vendors from hamburgers to gumbo and jambalaya. Community members said they wanted to be involved, so they said we’re going to cook, we’re going to share, we want to make sure people are fed and having fun.”
Hurst says over 100 trucks came to join the fun with a bag or treat and give out free candy or food.
Although the forecast was nervous, families couldn’t miss the big event. Last year it brought over 2,500 people to the area. Many of them, like Jasmine Payne, returned this year.
“It’s so close to home and there’s always a great vibe here. It’s quiet, family-oriented, and I know it’s a safe place for my kids and I to go trick or treating,” Payne said. “Our favorite holiday is Halloween, so whether it’s sleeting or snowing, we’ll come out here and get a treat or a treat. I mean – get with the times, you know – life throws you lemons and you make lemonade out of them, so we’ve got our umbrellas and we’re here to have fun.”
