Burning bodies found at Airport Highlands are being ruled a double homicide, neighbors say dumping is a major problem – WBRC

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – Police in Birmingham are classifying the death of two people were found in a burning car on Tuesday morning as a double homicide.

Nearby residents say the area has been a problem spot for illegal dumping for years. WBRC has learned that the land where the bodies were found is owned by the Birmingham Airport Authority, which says it is cooperating with neighbors and has contractors regularly cleaning the property.

Despite these efforts, neighbors insist the problem persists.

“I don’t even go up that road anymore because of what I saw. Glass in the middle of the road, trash and all that,” says Clarence Fuller.

Fuller has lived in the Airport Highlands community his entire life and says the land near his home has become a dumping ground for trash and, in some cases, corpses.

“About four blocks up, then another about two blocks that way, then another block on the other side,” adds Fuller. “Then I counted the one in Zion City, which was about eight blocks away. Thus, these were bodies that were discarded. They weren’t even in a car. They were just thrown away.

Both Fuller and Airport Highlands District President Chris Evans say the roads where all the dumping is happening should be blocked off.

“Roads really serve no purpose once you get over the hill; it is not intended for anything else; it’s just wooded areas,” says Evans.

“The airport will not cut down these forests. I was trying to contact them anyway because of all those trees. Trees always fall,” says Fuller.

Birmingham Airport Authority shared the following statement:

“There is an ongoing problem with littering in the area. And we regularly meet with neighborhood representatives to be aware of their concerns. The airport pays a contractor to regularly clean up litter dumped on property we own.’
