HOUSTON, Texas — Lizbeth Ortiz still remembers the vibrant colors and beautiful flowers growing next to a cemetery in Mexico.
“It didn’t look like a sad place, it looked like a big, festive party, and that’s why I have good memories,” Ortiz shared.
Dia de los Muertos is a holiday traditionally celebrated on November 1st and 2nd. It is a lively holiday that honors friends and family who have passed away.
It is also a holiday that influenced Ortiz’s paintings.
“I hope that when viewers look at my work, they not only feel a sense of hope or comfort from the colors and images, but also see beyond the borders of the country,” Ortiz said. “Dia de los Muertos is universal, we are all mortal.”
