Durham Regional Police are investigating a Thursday morning shooting in Whitby, Ont., that left a dog dead.
Around 7:20 a.m., officers responded to reports of a shooting at an apartment complex on Mary Street East near Garden Street.
Police say there are reports of a disturbance in one of the buildings, but there are no casualties at the scene.
In front of the apartment, the police found a dog with a gunshot wound. The animal was transported to a nearby emergency veterinary clinic, but later died of its injuries. Acting Staff Sgt. Joanne Bortolusse says these types of incidents “are not common.”
Police confirmed the breed was an American Bulldog. Details of gender, name and ownership have not been confirmed.
One person was arrested at the scene on charges unrelated to the shooting, according to police.
Another person, a man, attended a Toronto-area hospital with gunshot wounds. The man was transported to a Toronto-area trauma center with non-life threatening injuries. Police are still investigating whether there is a connection.
Bortolus told Global officials that police were searching the area.
Anyone with information is asked to contact police.
