The system will go into effect on November 4, and Guilford has announced locations where residents can purchase official household waste bags, which can then be brought to the transfer station.
The revenue from the bags will cover the removal of household waste. This is a change from the $9 per 100 pound system currently used at the transfer station.
Guilford highlighted several benefits of the PAYT system, saying it would reduce waste and promote fairness and equity by having residents only pay for the waste they produce. It will also encourage people to recycle and compost and help cities control waste management costs, Guilford said.
City-authorized bags will come in different sizes to suit different needs.
Prices are as follows:
- 15-gallon: $1.50 per bag, light blue bag ($7.50 per roll of 5)
- 33-gallon: $3 per bag, light blue bag ($15 per roll of 5)
- 8-gallon food waste bag: $0.20 per bag, green bag ($2 per roll of 10)
Bags can be purchased at the following locations, with more locations “coming soon.”
