A toddler was killed Monday in a tragic accident in the parking lot of a Fremont apartment complex.
The incident happened Monday morning around 11:45 a.m. at the Ardenwood Forest Rental Condominiums complex, in the area of Dunsmuir Common and Colleen Terrace. As the Fremont Police Department explained in a release, officers responded to multiple 911 calls about a pedestrian with a child involved in a crash.
Arriving police found the injured child and provided medical aid, but the child died from his injuries.
According to an initial investigation by the Fremont Police Department’s Traffic Investigation Unit, an elderly driver was backing out of a parking lot when the child unexpectedly ran out in front of the vehicle.
The child was hit by the front left part of the car, and the driver stopped immediately. The driver remained at the scene and fully cooperated with the police. Impairment by drugs or alcohol does not appear to be a factor, police say.
It was Fremont’s 11th fatal pedestrian collision of 2024.
Two weeks ago, a driver was killed in a solo accident in Fremont when his Tesla crashed into a building at high speed.
“As we grieve this tragic incident with our community, please respect the family’s privacy at this incredibly difficult time,” the police department said. “We’d also like to remind drivers to always be alert – on the road, in the driveway or in the parking lot. Always scan for pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists and anything moving around you.”
Anyone who witnessed the collision or has information is asked to contact the Fremont Police Traffic Division by calling the Fremont Police Department at 510-790-6760.
