Bodies found in burning car in Birmingham woods confirmed as victims of double homicide – AL.com

Two people found dead in a burning car in northeast Birmingham were victims of homicide, authorities said Thursday.

The discovery was made shortly before 8 a.m. Tuesday in the 1600 block of 90th Place North. It is in the Airport Highlands neighborhood of the Airport Hills community.

Firefighters from Birmingham were called to the wooded area to reports of smoke. They arrived to find the sedan engulfed.

After putting out the fire, they found two bodies inside. Both were burned beyond recognition.

Authorities have yet to say how the two were killed.

Birmingham Homicide detectives, as well as arson investigators and ATF agents also responded to the scene.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office said confirming their identities through DNA could be a lengthy process.

Police urged anyone missing a loved one to notify authorities.

Trooper Truman Fitzgerald said Thursday that concerned family members came forward and helped the medical examiner and detectives begin the identification process.
