Police officers were targeted with fireworks during riots overnight.

West Midlands Police said they were responding to reports of “groups of people throwing fireworks at each other and at neighboring buildings”.

The force said a dispersal order was in place in parts of central Birmingham after two people were injured during the disturbance.

It happened in the area of ​​Bagot Street and Staniforth Street around 02:00 GMT.

“We will take action against anyone involved in public order offenses or other crimes brought to our attention,” the police said in a statement.

Ambulance crews and firefighters also attended the area, which is popular with schoolchildren.

West Midlands Ambulance Service said it was called to the scene twice in quick succession, with paramedics dispatched at 03:10 and 03:55.

“A woman was treated for minor injuries before being advised to self-care and discharged at the scene,” a statement said.

“We then received a second call at the same location and sent an ambulance to the scene again.

“One woman was assessed by ambulance staff but did not require hospital treatment and was discharged at the scene.”
