Firearms at airports on the rise – KGNS

LAREDO, Texas (KGNS) – If you’re planning to travel with protection, there are a few things to keep in mind during the upcoming holiday season.

According to TSA spokesperson, Patricia Mancha, “Firearms must be unloaded. They must be packed in a hard-walled container with a padlock and must be declared to your airline in checked baggage.’

Mancha added that Dallas is the second airport in the nation with the most firearms found at security checkpoints, and while Laredo may not be at the top, firearms are still crossing.

“In 2022, we had four passengers who had firearms at Laredo International. This year we have two travelers who have brought firearms, and the year is not over,” Mancha noted.

The director of Laredo International Airport, Gilberto Sanchez, says security is a major concern at the airport and they are doing everything they can to screen any passengers with firearms they may have forgotten to declare.

Sanchez mentioned, “Rest assured that we have a very tight security system here in Laredo. Our police officers and TSA agents do an outstanding job.”

As the number of firearm detections increases, the TSA is stepping up its efforts to engage with the public, reminding passengers to recheck their bags before heading to the airport.
