AG Garland accuses GOP of spreading ‘conspiracy theory’ about Trump conviction – The National Desk

US Attorney General Merrick Garland suggested on Tuesday that Republicans upset by the outcome of former President Donald Trump’s money laundering trial were spreading a “conspiracy theory”.

Garland made the remark while testifying before the House Judiciary Committee. In his opening remarks, he told the Republican-led committee that he would not be intimidated by a myriad of questions about the Justice Department’s alleged involvement in the legal proceedings.

This comes alongside false claims that a jury verdict in a state trial handed down by a local district attorney was somehow controlled by the Department of Justice,” Garland said. “This conspiracy theory is an attack on the judicial process itself.”

The remark preceded a tense exchange between Garland and Rep. Matt Goetz, R-Fla., who challenged the attorney general on the issue. The representative asked Garland to provide the committee with copies of communications sent to prosecutors involved in the Trump cases.

“You told us it was a dangerous conspiracy theory to claim that the Department of Justice was communicating with these state and local prosecutions of Trump,” Congressman Goetz noted. “You can clear everything up for us right now.”

“When you say, ‘okay, we’ll take your request and move it through the DOJ accommodation process,’ you’re actually pushing the very dangerous conspiracy theory that you’re worried about,” he added to Garland.

In a poll of The National Desk (TND) readers, 75% agreed that the Justice Department “has been politically weaponized against Republicans and Donald Trump.”
