Jordan Brand continues to highlight the 30th anniversary of Michael Jordan’s pursuit of professional baseball with the “Barons” shoe. Following on from the Jordan 1 Low and Jordan 12 colorways inspired by Mike’s minor league team, the Jordan 39 steps up with its own black and gray “Barons” makeup.
Award-winning MLB manager Terry Francona said in The last dance that if Michael Jordan had gotten enough at-bats, he might have made it to the majors. However, as we all know, fate had other plans and Mike’s baseball career ended after 127 games with the Birmingham Barons, the Double-A affiliate of the Chicago White Sox. Although Mike’s first retirement from basketball was short-lived, it became an important starting point for Jordan Brand in 2014 with the “Barons Pack,” which featured the Jordan 1 and Jordan 9. We’ve been getting occasional “Barons” releases throughout the ten years that passed since then, but as mentioned above, Jordan Brand is revisiting the theme more often in 2024 in honor of Touchpoint’s 30th anniversary.
Bringing the focus back to the Jordan 39 ‘Barons’ itself, the design borrows the colors of the Birmingham Barons jersey with a black quarter and light gray leather on the forefoot. As for performance, the AJ39 features full-length Zoom Air cushioning and ZoomX foam, the latter of which is not used in any other Jordan Brand shoe.
The Jordan 39 “Barons” is slated to release during the 2024 holiday season for $200, although Jordan Brand has not confirmed an exact date at the time of writing. Know that this article will be updated with all available information as it becomes available.
