FREMONT, Calif. – A three-year-old child was struck by a vehicle and killed in Fremont, according to the Fremont Police Department.
The collision happened around 11:45 a.m. Monday as the driver was pulling out of a parking space at Dunsmuir Common and Colleen Terrace.
Fremont police officers began performing CPR on the injured child when they arrived after multiple calls to 911. Fremont Fire Department personnel took over when they arrived a short time later. Unfortunately, the child died on the spot.
“As we grieve this tragic incident with our community, please respect the family’s privacy at this incredibly difficult time,” the police department said in a written statement. “We’d also like to remind drivers to always be vigilant whether on the road, in the driveway or in the parking lot.” Always scan for pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists and anything moving around you.”
The Fremont Police Department’s Traffic Investigation Unit is investigating the cause of the crash. “The preliminary investigation indicates that an elderly driver was driving his vehicle forward from a parking lot when a child unexpectedly moved in front of the vehicle,” the police statement continued. “Then the front left of the vehicle hit the child. The driver stopped the vehicle immediately.”
The driver continues to cooperate with investigators. Drug and alcohol impairment does not appear to be a factor.
