Washington (AP) – US Health Officers ask retailers to download a small number of acne creams from their store shelves after government tests have found that they contain slightly elevated chemical levels associated with cancer.
The Food and Drug Administration has said that several batches of six products containing benzoyl peroxide are being withdrawn, including Acne Walgreens, Proactiv Shown Smoothing Exfoliator and La Roche-Posay Duo Dual Action Acne ACTE treatment. The full list and number of batches were posted online on Tuesday.
FDA stresses consumers to face a low risk of products.
“Even with the daily use of these products for decades, the risk of a person to develop cancer due to exposure to benzene found in these products is very low,” the agency said.
All products contain benzene, chemical component of raw oil, gas and cigarette smoke. Prolonged exposure to high levels can cause leukemia and other cancers.
The withdrawals, announced this week, apply to stores that sell the items. FDA officials said users should not take specific action.
FDA identifies the six products after testing 95 acne treatment products. The agency’s review was encouraged by testing reports from private laboratories about excess benzene levels in a number of acne products.
In recent years, a variety of other products through benzene levels, including descendants, aerosols and sunscreens, has been recalled.
