LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – On October 17th, the Texas Student Senate passed Resolution 60.26. It is demanding that the university implement a program by August 2025 to offer and regularly stock free feminine hygiene products in at least one restroom in every building on campus.
Johannes Villarreal Duarte Boyer is one of the three authors of the resolution. He, along with co-authors Siwar Kefi and Savannah Armitage, met with university and community leaders to discuss the need for more access to feminine hygiene.
Boyer says students have struggled to cope with the limited access currently seen on campus.
“I’ve heard from a lot of students that there’s not enough access to feminine hygiene products,” Boyer said. “To the university’s credit, there are about five or six places on campus, but they can be, depending on where the class is, it can be a 10- to 15-minute walk.”
This limitation has forced some to go through unnecessary hurdles to get their education.
“I know a lot of classmates who have had to leave class to go to another building or go to the local CVS or whatever the local place is to buy supplies,” Boyer said.
He explains another major problem is that it is not clear exactly where these areas are currently on campus. That’s why the resolution also calls for prominently labeling and advertising the locations of these designated restrooms in each building.
With nearly 21,000 female students enrolled this semester, he hopes this call to action will benefit them.
“Hopefully we’ll be able to get the Texas Tech campus community and the Lubbock community involved in this because it’s going to take all of us.”
