Stokes, who is originally from Cockermouth, released a statement on X saying a number of masked people burgled his home in the Castle Eden area of the North East on the evening of Thursday 17 October.
Stokes moved to the north east from Cumbria when he joined Durham as a teenager and has lived in the region ever since.
The burglary this month happened while he was captaining the England Test team in a series in Pakistan – his wife and two young children were at home at the time of the theft.
The following day, Stokes was dismissed for 37 as England were beaten in the second Test.
The 33-year-old man decided to make the incident public in the hope of catching the culprits.
In a statement on social media site X, the England captain said: “They got away with jewellery, other valuables and a lot of personal belongings. Many of these items have real sentimental value to me and my family. They are irreplaceable.
“This is an appeal for any help to find these people who committed this act. The worst part of this crime is that it was committed while my wife and 2 young children were in the house. Fortunately, none of my family some physical damage occurred.
“However, it is understandable that the experience affected their emotional and mental state. All we can think about is how much worse this situation could have been. I am posting pictures of some of the stolen items – which I hope will be easy to identify – in the hope that we can find the people responsible.
Although we lost dear possessions, to be clear, my only motivation for sharing these photos is not the recovery of material possessions. It’s to catch the people who did this. Please come forward and contact Durham Police on 101 quoting crime number CRI00575927 if you believe you have any relevant information.
“Finally, I want to thank the police. Both now and while I was in Pakistan, their support for my family was outstanding. They continue to work incredibly hard in trying to find these people.”
