FREMONT – A driver struck and killed a toddler while backing out of a parking lot Monday morning in Fremont, police said.
The fatal collision happened around 11:45 a.m. at Colleen Terrace and Dunsmuir Common, according to the Fremont Police Department.
The initial investigation determined that a driver was backing out of a parking lot when a 3-year-old child “unexpectedly moved in front of the vehicle,” police said in a news release. The front left part of the vehicle hit the toddler and the driver immediately stopped.
Police and firefighters performed life-saving measures, but the child died of his injuries at the scene, according to police.
The driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation, police said.
The cause of the crash is under investigation, but police say alcohol and drugs did not play a role.
The death marks the city’s 11th road accident of the year. Six occurred on roadways, three on state property and two on private property.
