Durham, NC (WTVD) – Against the background of the President Trump’s mass deportment plan, the Siembra NC is trying to understand the word of combating the misinformation associated with the law enforcement of immigration laws.
More than 200 people attended the training of the immigrant advocacy group on Saturday morning. This is something the group has been doing since 2017 and has recently observed increased interest.
“We believe the rumors are actually really harmful to the community,” said Marley Martinez, the Siembra NC Rapid Response Coordinator, before the ABC11.
Siembra NC is a major organization that works to overlap the Latin American community in North Carolina. The group also has a hot line for people who are discriminated against in their community or if they see ice in their neighborhood.
It is flooded with calls reporting ice activities from the day of taking office.
“We have received over 1300 calls to our community’s hotline after taking office and for comparison, on a random day in August last year, we may receive three calls a day,” Martinez said. “So, we saw a attack on the rumors and just shared a bunch of photos of identified vehicles or our local law enforcement authorities, you just know, perform their operations.”
Martinez said some rumors encouraged fear in the community, although they were not always rooted in the truth.
“It will be like, you know, the ice is out of school,” she said, “We actually had a rumor … A few weeks ago where many parents actually called and were like”, I will keep my child home from school today To miss my child or to raise my child, or I will not go to work ” – and none of that was checked. “
If the hotline receives a report that the ice is in a neighborhood, the organization works to check it. If can, the public will be notified.
Martinez also stressed that they do not engage and do not disturb the implementation of immigration if they see them to work, since the role of the organization is more rooted in awareness.
Their main message right now is to be extremely cautious of what you share online.
“Instead of sharing a post or photo, ask yourself where it comes from and who saw it?” Martinez said. “If you have not seen it and does not come from a verified source, do not share this picture.”
