Tonight, the Cleveland Cavaliers will face off against LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers. First, let’s take a look at the news and connections of the day.
The first sip
Darius Garland’s offense drew most of the headlines from Monday’s game against the New York Knicks, and rightfully so. His 34-point performance was impressive. But his defense was also remarkable.
Kenny Atkinson mentioned unprompted at media day that he thinks Garland is a good quarterback.
“Defensively, I’ve always graded him as a plus linebacker,” Atkinson said. “[He’s a] competitor, elite defensive instincts. He’s still a young guy, he’s developing his body, so he’ll keep getting stronger.
Garland reaffirmed Atkinson’s faith in him on Monday. He spent most of the time on the court covering 6’6” wing Mikal Bridges and was more than himself. Garland also recorded two steals, a block and a slew of good contests in the final five minutes to secure the win.
Garland was in the right position on every play and wasn’t beaten on the ball by any of the Knicks’ offensive linemen. It’s easier to play that way when you have the backcourt that Cleveland does, but it’s good to see Garland show he can fit in on that end. Especially in a defense that is much more likely to involve screens.
Cavs news
The charge left the floor in the public audience. Must be a nice place if the pictures are any indication.
In other major news, Jarrett Allen has been confirmed as a cat owner. You love to see that.
