Purchased for $30,000 in February 2016 by Ameer Najor and given to trainer Paul Holzman, Southwind Amazon quickly caught the eye with a blistering performance of 1:49.2 just five starts into his tenure with his new connections.

For most of 2024, Southwind Amazon chased Nifit’s record of 137 wins, and on Tuesday he equaled that mark while piloted by Justin Irvine in the $8,400 Conditional Pace.

I’m A Skoldier (Chris Lems) got the jump on Southwind Amazon on the opening turn, but Irvine pushed Southwind Amazon to the lead entering the backstretch, reaching the quarter in :26.4. Irvine slowed down in the second quarter, reaching the halfway point in :56.1. Entering the rear, White Hair Rocks (Keith Kash Jr.) leaned out, pulling Honali (Hunter Myers) as the two tried to start a bid for Southwind Amazon, who continued to move on the front end after three quarters in 1 : 25. Turning for home, Irvine asked Southwind Amazon for more as he cruised to an impressive record victory, winning by 2-1/4 lengths.

“We have waited so long for this moment; I can’t explain how happy we all are for Southwind Amazon,” said an emotional Holtzman. “I cannot express my emotions in words; all day i felt like this could be the day.

SOUTHWIND AMAZON REPEAT

Irvine has had many firsts this year, including driving in his first Grand Circuit race, but he said helping the links earn that feat was one of the highlights of the year.

“I’m excited for these guys. I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to ride such a nice horse,” said the 22-year-old reinsman.

Southwind Amazon increased his career earnings to $1,496,374.

“Going to the track with my dad when I was little, I never thought I’d have a horse like this,” Holtzman said. “I’m so grateful.”
