Cool rain ahead for southern plains – KCBD

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Change is on the way, albeit subtle at first. The weather in the Southern Plains is changing from summer early this week to late fall by the end of the week.

Yesterday brought another round of record heat to the Southern Plains. Lubbock again reached 91°, tying the record for the date set in 1943. Childress reached its peak of 93°, breaking the record of 91° set on the date in 1938.

Partly cloudy, windy and warm this afternoon. Temperatures will be about 15 degrees above average for the end of October.

South winds will increase to 20 to 30 mph with occasional gusts near 40 mph. It’s a NO BURN DAY. There may be areas of low visibility with blowing dust, especially over the northwestern viewing area.

Windy again this evening with partly cloudy skies. Temperatures will gradually drop to 50-60 degrees. Another very mild night and morning for late October.

Less heat and wind tomorrow, but still above average temperatures and still a bit windy. Highs around five to ten degrees above average are expected, ranging from the low 50s in the northwesternmost viewing area to the upper 60s in the far southeast.

Halloween will be dry, but with a cold start. I’m expecting our coldest morning of the season so far. Lows may drop to near freezing in the far northwest viewing area. My forecast low for Lubbock is 39°.

Thursday will also be sunny with a cool afternoon. Highs will range from the mid-60s to mid-70s. The wind will generally be light.

Thursday night will be cool but otherwise mild. Dress up for it.
