‘Time Cut’ Review – Madison Bailey Travels Back in Time in Netflix’s Cheesy Y2K Slasher – Collider

Since then Time Cut was announced by Netflix, there were mixed reactions, mostly due to the fact that a time-traveling slasher came out a year earlier via Prime Video called Absolutely killer. The film with the participation of Kiernan Shipka her character is transported back to the 80s to save her mother’s best friends from a masked killer on the loose. in the same way Time Cutwith supervisor Madison Bailey (Foreign banks), also follows its protagonist who rewinds to a different point in time to prevent history from repeating itself.

Although the plots of the two titles seem quite close to each other, the Netflix film was actually filmed during the pandemic, and its premiere was delayed until this year. That being said the similarities between them are just coincidencethe project led by Hannah McPherson is a tender story between two siblings who bond under unusual circumstances. However, by focusing on the budding relationship between them, the horror elements of the film take a back seat.

What is “Time Cut” for?

Time Cut centers on Lucy Field (Bailey), a would-be scientist who has just learned that she has been selected to intern at NASA. Although she is over the moon about her dreams coming true, her parents don’t seem too thrilled with her achievement. Instead of encouraging her to take advantage of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, they look at each other and start listing some of the reasons why they’d rather she stay out of their hometown. Their reaction is mostly influenced by the grief they still feel from the death of their oldest daughter, Summer (Ginny and Georgiais Antonia Gentry), who was murdered in cold blood by a thug in 2003.

While paying tribute on the anniversary of her death, Lucy stumbles upon a time machine and is transported to the days before the shocking incident. After meeting his sister at school and finally getting to know her beyond the pictures hanging on the walls of her home, the main character becomes determined to save the sibling he finally manages to meet. Yet, in doing so, she risks the chances of her own survival, given that her parents would not have had her if they had not lost their firstborn child.

although Time Cut is a slasher film, it turns out to be much more sentimental than audiences would initially assume. This is due in part to the chemistry between Bayley and Gentry as the main duo. From their first interaction, the idea that they are siblings who are just getting to know each other is possible because their image on screen looks like real. One can’t help but feel drawn to their growing friendship, even though they’ve only been together for a few days. The scene of Lucy making out in Summer’s bedroom, putting on heart-shaped sunglasses and low-waisted jeans, is a standout moment between them because it not only shows how organic their relationship is, but also tips the hat for the type of sequence that was a staple of early 2000s film.

Madeline Klein also talks about Sara’s relationship with Rafe and how it might change in the future.

It might be unnerving to think that a time-traveling movie would consider 2003 enough of a throwback, but maybe that’s because I grew up watching coming-of-age projects that came out around the time or close enough until this year. What a girl wants, Scary Friday, The Lizzie McGuire Moviei could go on and on about how formative these movies were for me. So when Lucy lands in 2003 and wanders the hallways filled with students wearing Juicy Culture tracksuits, tennis shoes with squeaky wheels and colorful hair clips, the sights are a blast from the past. Having Hilary Duff“So Yesterday” playing in the background when Lucy spots her sister walking by was the icing on the cake. The wardrobe and the needle enter Time Cut made the early 2000s as iconic as the 80s or 90salthough it seems like just yesterday flip phones were all the rage.

“Time Cut” doesn’t lean entirely on its slasher components

Yet, beneath the welcoming nostalgic feel, the film is essentially a slasher. The killer is on the hunt for the four students that Lucy knows will soon be killed. That is if she can prevent this from happening entirely with the help of a school outcast (played by Griffin Gluck). When it comes to Time Cutwith gruesome undertones, the project barely scratches the surface when it comes to the gore and dramatization of the murders. This comes as a surprise, given that Michael Kennedyresponsible for ext Strange and last year’s pleasant This is a beautiful knifeco-wrote the film’s screenplay with McPherson. Except for the events held in the mall, there are almost no memorable screams, thrilling chases or revelations.

All in all, Netflix’s newest ghost release is better as a time travel story about two sisters living in an alternate reality where they are both alive than a compelling slasher. Its emphasis on nostalgia and the bond between the main siblings detracts from the film’s horror elements, making the few instances where the killer strikes less impactful. However, if you’re hoping to double the gore during the Halloween season, this delightful yet kitschy title will suit you. It’s forgettable, but it also manages to offer the comforting feeling that the early 2000s captured so well.
