Theater Tuscaloosa will hold open auditions for “Master Class” on November 12th and 13th at 6:30pm in the Alabama Power Recital Hall on the Martin Campus of Shelton State Community College.
In this Tony Award-winning play by Terence McNally, opera diva Maria Callas leads a one-of-a-kind master class in an elite opera training program. Based on a series of real-life classes given by Callas at Juilliard, this show gives us a glimpse into the complex, driven and insatiable life of one of the greatest artists of the 20th century.
Dr. Alison Upshaw helms this production as director. She is joined by Jeanette Waterman, costume designer; and Charles Prosser, sound designer.
“I’ve loved this show since we first read it during the pandemic,” said Theater Tuscaloosa Executive Producer Tina Turley. “Dr. Upshaw has been working with Ava Buchanan on this show since August! When they complete the cast, I know this show will be top notch.”
The lead role of Maria Callas has been cast, but there are other roles including the following: First Soprano/Sophie De Palma, Manny/Accompanist, Second Soprano/Sharon Graham, Tenor/Anthony Candolini and Stage Hand. A complete list of characters and their descriptions can be found at theatretusc.com.
Those who sign up to audition will be given specific music to prepare for the audition. An accompanist will be provided to play sheet music. Be prepared to participate in cold readings of the script. Auditions are encouraged to check in up to 30 minutes in advance.
Auditions must complete an online audition form (found at theatretusc.com) and submit it via the link prior to auditions.
“Master Class” scripts are available for reading at the Theater Tuscaloosa management office in advance (recommended); however, scripts cannot leave the premises. The office is open Monday through Thursday
9am to 3pm and Friday 9am to noon.
The final rehearsal schedule will be announced after casting. Rehearsals will normally be held from 7:00pm to 10:00pm Monday to Friday and from 1:00pm to 4:00pm on Sundays leading up to the performance weeks. The Master Class performances take place February 5-9, 2025 in the Alabama Power Recital Hall on the Martin Campus of Shelton State Community College.
