Norfolk, Washington – Have you ever wondered how cities decide which roads to plow after snowfall?

As Hampton Rhodes do not get snow often, most local authorities do not have much urban resources dedicated to snow removal. That is why most cities cannot plow every street when we get a snow accumulation.

Instead, they focus their resources on clearing major roads.

Most cities separate road lanes on primary routes, secondary routes and residential streets.

The initial routes are cleared first because they are the most traveling. The secondary routes are plowed after clearing the primary routes.

The Ministry of Transport of Virginia is engaged in state roads and interconnections, such as I-64, I-264 and other large arteries.

Most cities publish the main and secondary routes online. Here’s what we compiled from each city’s website:

The Emergency routes are first cleared in Chesapike. Then the main routes that are important to business and the government are cleared. Secondary routes include the second level of roads important to business and the government.

Later, crews work on routes of connectors that facilitate transportation between primary routes.

The adjacent roads will not be treated or cleared, according to the snow reaction plan in the city.

Route 7 includes a small part of the streets near the Back River Road. Route 8 includes a section of streets near Pine Chapel Road.

Newport News breaks down its sails into three sections: Priority 1, 2 and 3.

Priority 1 includes hills, bridges and subways, which are usually the first areas to freeze. These will be addressed the first streets.

The crews then go to priority 2: arterial and basic collector streets. They will be discussed after the end of the priority roads 1. Priority 3 roads include collector streets that usually have a moderate volume of traffic.

In extreme weather conditions, crews will clear the streets leading to alternative bus stops.

For the city of Norfolk crews give priority to primary routes and main connectors. The residential streets are not plowed due to the size of the equipment.

City workers begin by removing roads to prevent snow and ice from sticking, after which they start to plow when the snow is over 2 inches. Operations focus on the main routes, hospitals, EMS stations and city garages. After the primary routes are cleared, crews and performers deal with the secondary routes.

Portsmouth snow operations begin when the snow exceeds 2 inches. At this point, the ban on parking throughout the city usually comes into force.

The crews work on 24 plow routes, each of which takes three hours, according to the city’s website. The city gives priority to roads according to the volume of traffic and public safety needs. After the roads are cleared, the sidewalk cleansing begins.

Williamsburg breaks its routes on primary roads and secondary roads. The city is waiting for 1-2 inches of snow to accumulate before crews start clearing roads.

Crews will plow primary roads until they are passable. The crews will then go to secondary roads and move to residential streets as the last priority.

Virginia Beach crews are working to maintain mobility under priority 1 and priority 2 streets.

During the snowfall, crews concentrate on maintaining a priority of 1 public transport routes and emergency vehicles.

After snow stops falling, crews concentrate on clearing snow of priority 1 and 2 streets for public use.

“The streets in the neighborhood are not cleared, as parked vehicles and other safety reasons do not make snowfall on these streets practically or economically efficient,” the city’s website said.
