MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – The stage curtains will open this weekend as the Madison Opera begins a new season at the Overture Center. For the first weekend, the theater is bringing back operatic classics, starting with The Barber of Seville.
Premieres this Friday at 7:30pm and then Sunday at 2:30pm
Madison Opera General Director Catherine Smith visited WMTV on Tuesday and shared why this opera will be a great way to open the season.
“It’s your basic romantic comedy, boy and girl want to get together. The barber helps them get together. It’s funny, it’s cute, it’s adorable. It’s the perfect escape,” Smith said.
She further explained that the first premiere was in 1816 and was performed all over the world. Not only will it make you laugh, but Smith also said that the music in opera is designed to entertain.
“A lot of things that help people enjoy music and enjoy being together with their community,” Smith said.
While Smith was here, she also discussed the lineup for the rest of the season, which includes Maria de Buenos Aires and Don Juan. She said it’s great that people are coming back to the theater after going through a digital period with COVID-19.
“There’s really something that happens when you see people from four different generations laughing at the same thing in the same space. You don’t look at the screen, you experience it.
You can purchase tickets here for the opening weekend.
