Nevada Humanities Celebrate Día de los Muertos at Sierra Arts Foundation – KOLO

RENO, Nev. (COLO) – The community is invited to join Nevada Humanities this weekend for an evening of poetry and conversation as we honor and celebrate Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead).

Several guests stopped by Morning Break to talk about this event, including: George Tsz-Kwan Lam, associate director at Nevada Humanities; Dr. Daniel Enrique Perez, one of the Humanities Advisors for the Latin American Poetry Initiative and Anthology and Associate Professor of Chicano and Latino Literature at the University of Nevada, Reno; and Jesse James Ziegler, 2024-2025 City of Reno Poet Laureate.

The Day of the Dead celebration and conversation takes place on Saturday, November 2nd from 6:00pm to 8:00pm at the Sierra Foundation for the Arts in Reno. Ziegler will moderate the program; Perez will present the opening remarks; and then several local poets will share original poems and readings from the anthology in English, Spanish and Spanish. It aims to explore themes of origin and identity, heritage, language and family and community. A Q&A and conversation will follow.

This program is presented by Nevada Humanities as part of Latino Poetry: Places We Call Home, a major public humanities initiative taking place across the country in 2024 and 2025 led by the Library of America and funded with generous support from the National Endowment for humanities and the Emerson Collective. Places We Call Home seeks to foster conversation across the country through a new anthology edited by Rigoberto Gonzalez, events across the country, an online media archive, and a wealth of library resources designed to stimulate deep thought and discussion on key figures and topics.
