LAREDO, Texas (KGNS) – Bishop James Tamayo of the Diocese of Laredo submitted his traditional resignation to the Pope on his 75th birthday.
In a statement, Bishop Tamayo explained that the pope could accept the resignation now or at a later date if the bishop is in good health.
Bishop Tamayo has been with the Diocese of Laredo since it was created in 2000, serving as its first bishop.
In his letter to the parishioners, he reflected on his service and the process of resignation: “The Holy Father asks each bishop to shepherd his diocese faithfully and responsibly. The Pope also requires every bishop, after reaching the age of 75, to submit a letter of resignation from office. The Pope may immediately accept the resignation or postpone its acceptance.
He also noted that in recent years, bishops who have reached that age continue to serve if their health permits, often two to three more years.
Bishop Tamayo celebrated his birthday on October 23 and said, “Until the Pope informs me of his decision, I remain Bishop of the Diocese of Laredo and will continue to faithfully serve God and you, my dear diocesan family.”
