Temporary traffic lights in place at A1(M) County Durham exit after crash damage – Yahoo News UK

Temporary traffic lights are to be installed at an exit from the A1(M) in County Durham this week following a crash at the junction earlier this month.

Motorists exiting the A1(M) from junction 62 at Carrville will be greeted by temporary traffic lights from this week after the original lights were damaged in a crash on October 21.

Traffic was backed up for miles northbound at the junction during rush hour in the following days as motorists faced delays of up to half an hour after the crash as the lights were not switched back on.

National Highways has already confirmed that the temporary traffic lights will be in place at some point this week – but a completion date for the repairs has not been confirmed.

A National Highways spokesman said: “The traffic lights in question were damaged during a collision on Monday 21 October.

“Due to the damage to the traffic light poles on one of the roads, the rest of the lights could not be switched back on as it would be dangerous to do so.

“The temporary traffic lights have been arranged and should be in place this week along with the necessary permanent signs.

“Plans are underway to find a permanent fix, but there is no timetable for this to be completed.”

The Northern Echo contacted numerous motorists on October 23 who said the lights not working were causing “huge delays” as queues stretched as far as Bowburn.
