Vice President Kamala Harris has joined star musical guests Beyoncé and Bruce Springsteen at campaign events in other states in recent weeks. Now the vice president will perform his show in Madison on Wednesday with a stacked lineup of popular musicians in a bid to attract the support of young voters.
The exact location of the rally in Madison has not been announced, but preliminary media reports say the event will take place in the evening.
Harris will join music stars Gracie Abrams, Remi Wolf, Mumford & Sons, and The National’s Aaron Dessner and Matt Berninger.
Members of the public wishing to attend the event can find more information here.
The Harris-Walz campaign has pointed to musicians as trusted voices for fans, noting the hope that young people will be more likely to vote — and vote for Harris — if the musicians they follow and admire support the vice president.
The vice president has paid special attention to Wisconsin — and Madison in particular — in recent months. Harris held a packed rally at the Alliant Energy Center Coliseum on Sept. 26, and last week former President Barack Obama and Minnesota vice presidential candidate Tim Waltz held a rally at the same venue to promote early voting.
Dane County is Wisconsin’s fastest-growing county and has long served as a reliable bastion of liberal voters, an electoral key Harris must secure in his quest to win Wisconsin and the White House.
A significant target for the Harris campaign is University of Wisconsin students, who are allowed to vote in Wisconsin, even if they are out-of-state residents, as long as they have a valid voter ID card and have resided in the state for at least 28 days prior to Nov. 5.
Wednesday’s lineup of musicians marks the latest in a growing number of stars who have endorsed the vice president. Others include Taylor Swift, Jennifer Lopez, Ariana Grande, Billie Eilish, Eminem and Wisconsin’s Bon Iver.
It remains to be seen what concrete effect celebrity endorsements have on voter turnout or candidate choice.
Former President Donald Trump has boasted the support of musician Kid Rock, former star wrestler Hulk Hogan, actor Dennis Quaid, billionaire tech mogul Elon Musk and a host of internet personalities and conservative podcasters.
