Actor Adam Brody, known for his role as Seth Cohen on Fox’s The OC and more recently as Noah on Nobody Wants This, hosted a student meet-and-greet on behalf of the Harris-Walz Campaign in Madison on Sunday, where he spoke about the key Madison’s role in what he called a “historic election.”
The Democratic Party of Wisconsin hosted the event to encourage University of Wisconsin-Madison students to vote early in support of Vice President Kamala Harris in the upcoming presidential election. After the event, Brody spoke privately with small groups of students about their hopes for the outcome of the election.
The Daily Cardinal spoke with Brody about why he thinks Madison, specifically UW-Madison students, are important in this election, what advice he would give to first-time voters, and what he would take home as a souvenir from Wisconsin .
This interview has been edited for clarity and brevity.
How are you feeling in Madison?
Wonderful, enthusiastic, energized and comforted to see so many energetic, enthusiastic people who are passionate and full of hope.
Why do you think it is so important to speak specifically to University of Wisconsin-Madison students?
Well, starting broad and zooming in, Wisconsin is a swing state, and I think students in general, for good reason, tend to lean more Democratic. At the same time, I thought that the participation would not be so strong. So there’s a lot of room for growth, for activation, for motivation, and it also seems like they’re the people who are interested in talking to me.
What would you say to students who are undecided about voting?
There is a list of priorities, policies, positions and rights that I personally care about. Perhaps we share these values or views, common or not—reproductive freedom, the climate crisis, the problem of homelessness and homelessness, the epidemic of gun violence, democracy abroad. These are all big problems. But I would say regardless of how you feel about any of them… we have a guy who is close to the post who is a pathological liar who is surrounded by henchmen and millions of people that he has driven crazy.
I can’t stress enough the danger of that, not only to all of these priorities that I just listed, but to keeping the lights on, to keeping the garbage trucks on, to avoiding nuclear war. I mean, profound instability is deadly dangerous to every person on this planet.
I’m not just encouraging you to vote. This is a must because we are in a historic time. We are seven days away from making history. So vote and knock on some doors because you’ll remember these moments for the rest of your life. It’s so historic. Whatever happens, you’ll remember where you were and what you did, and you’ll be proud to say you did something.

To clarify, you are urging young voters to vote based on facts, right?
I urge people to vote based on facts, for people who build consensus and are surrounded by experts and don’t just follow one person’s whim and imagination, not someone who leads with division. I mean, Trump openly denigrates half the Americans and half the American cities all the time. This is not a leader for this country. You have to be president for everyone.
Celebrity endorsements can be powerful, so what would you say to students who are skeptical about celebrity influence in this election?
There’s no reason anyone should have to listen to me more than their neighbor, you know? Maybe I can get a little more attention, but that doesn’t mean my opinion is any more valuable or wise.
Looking back, what advice would you give a “young Adam Brody” when voting in a presidential election for the first time?
Oh…do the midterms first. Make yours local [elections]. Because the thing is, everyone is getting involved in the presidential race, and it’s having a big impact. But if you want to impact your life the most, it’s like who’s on the school board, who’s your local judge? Make it local. Make it local. Make it local.
Finally, if you could take one thing home from Madison other than food, what would it be??
[Laughs] I mean… domestic cow? Other than food, I don’t know what treats you have… Oh, the Electoral College votes!
