BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) – Halloween is two days away. Now that most of the decorations are out of your home and the candy to hand out is ready to go, the job is almost done. Before you join the games of your kids and their friends, the Baton Rouge Fire Department, Baton Rouge Police Department and EMS have safety guidelines to keep in mind this year.
Officials also ask members of the public to be careful when trick-or-treating is used. The following safety tips have been posted.
- Plan your route: Before you go trick-or-treating, plan your route ahead of time. Stick to well-lit areas and neighborhoods you know. Tell someone where you will be and approximately how long you will be gone.
- Stay visible: Wear reflective or brightly colored costumes, or add reflective tape to your child’s clothing and goody bag. Carry a flashlight or glow sticks to make sure drivers see you.
- Check out Candy: When you get home, go through all the Halloween treats. Discard any unwrapped or suspicious-looking items. If your child has food allergies, be extra vigilant and check labels for allergens.
- Stay on the sidewalks: Remind children to always walk on sidewalks and to be careful when crossing roads. Avoid crossing yards or streets in the dark.
- Use the Buddy System: Whenever possible, travel in a group with a trusted adult. The buddy system ensures safety and is more fun when playing with tricks.
