Authorities have launched an investigation in Costa Mesa after a woman’s body was found in a trash can behind a house Tuesday.
The discovery was made behind a single-family home in the 1900 block of Maple Avenue, according to the Costa Mesa Police Department. Officers were called to the scene shortly before 2:30 a.m. after learning of the woman’s death.
Investigators say the body is believed to be that of 38-year-old Julie Ann Sanetra.
Witnesses say a team of gardeners discovered the remains while working on the property.
“The victim’s friend was identified as the suspect and is located in Glendale,” CMPD said in a statement. “Detectives from Costa Mesa traveled to Glendale and arrested the suspect.”
Investigators identified him as Daniel Allen Aldrich, 49. Costa Mesa police found him at a family member’s home in the 3700 block of El Lado Drive in Glendale.
No further information was provided.
The surrounding area was cordoned off while the investigation continued, seen by SkyCal overhead Tuesday afternoon.
Neighbors were shocked when they heard the news.
“It’s spooky, it’s disturbing,” said Riley Austin, who lives nearby. “It’s a good neighborhood.”
“We don’t usually hear these things happen in Costa Mesa,” another neighbor said.
Perhaps even more troubling than that, many neighbors say they never saw anyone at the home.
“In two years, I’ve never seen anyone come and go from that house,” Austin said.
