An arrest was made after a Fontana police vehicle was hit during an investigation in Riverside and a suspect crashed shortly after, killing a passenger on Thursday, October 24.
Around 2:30 p.m., Riverside Police responded to a traffic collision at Riverwalk Parkway and Collette Avenue in the La Sierra neighborhood, where they found a suspect had crashed a white Nissan Maxima into a Fontana Police Department vehicle.
Fontana police were chasing the suspect when he crashed his car into their vehicle in an attempt to flee the scene, Riverside police said in a statement Monday, Oct. 28.
While searching for the suspect, they came across a multi-vehicle crash nearby involving the white Nissan. The suspect, a 62-year-old man, identified as Ezekial Avendano Lopez, was injured and transported to a local hospital where he was medically evaluated and subsequently arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer.
An unidentified 49-year-old female passenger in the suspect’s vehicle was also transported from the scene to a local hospital where she died from her injuries.
Three other participants in the collision suffered minor injuries.
Avendano Lopez was held on $1 million bail and additional charges related to the fatal traffic collision are pending, police said in a statement.
Detectives are seeking witnesses who saw the suspect driving the white Nissan Maxima prior to the crash at Riverwalk Parkway and Collett Avenue and are asking anyone with additional information to contact Detective Jeff Derowin at 951-826-8722.
