BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – Police in Birmingham say two children are in stable condition after being shot on 3rd Avenue West on October 15th. They were in a car with two adults when someone opened fire while they were stopped at a traffic light.
Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin is urging the community to come forward with any information they may have. He stressed that we cannot allow criminals to feel comfortable committing violent acts, especially when children are involved. Woodfin said this was unacceptable and encouraged anyone with knowledge of the incident to come forward with information.
“Approximately 20 gunshots were recovered in the 1400 block of 3rd Avenue West. When officers arrived on scene, they found one adult and two juvenile victims suffering from apparent gunshot wounds,” said Birmingham Police Sgt. Laquita Wade. The woman was not shot.
According to Sgt. Wade, the shooting happened around 8:00 p.m. when West Precinct officers received a ShotSpotter alert. Mayor Woodfin described the attack as extremely brave and unconscionable.
“A couple of nights ago somebody was bold enough to follow a family, a woman and a man in a car and kids in the car, and when that car stopped at a traffic light, shot at that car and shot the kids,” says Woodfin.
He emphasized that these are experiences that no child should have to face.
“Every time a child is shot, every time a child is hurt, we have to step up as adults in this community. We are the village. We must protect this child or children. If an adult feels comfortable shooting a child and people have that information and won’t take it out, then they have the ability to shoot another child,” Woodfin says.
Birmingham police are working with federal partners to investigate the shooting and are seeking possible witnesses and surveillance footage from the area. If you have any information, you can contact Crime Stoppers anonymously.
