28 years later star Ralph Fiennes recently offered some new details about the trilogy of films being developed by Danny Boyle and Alex Garland.
During a recent interview with IndieWire, Fiennes confirmed, “It’s three movies,” and then revealed, “two of which have been shot.”
As for plot details, the actor went on to say, “Britain is 28 years into this horrible plague of infected people who are violent, rabid people with a few pockets of uninfected communities.
“And it centers on a young boy who wants to find a doctor to help his dying mother. He leads his mother through this beautiful northern English terrain. But of course, around them hide in forests and hills and forests are the infected.
“But he finds a doctor who is someone who we might think would be weird and strange, but is actually a force for good.”
It was also revealed that the sequel was titled 28 Years Later, Part II: The Bone Templewhich Nia DaCosta was in talks to direct earlier this year, with a script by Garland. No word on whether she directed it or not. I guess she did though.
Cillian Murphy reprises his role in 28 years later as Jim, a former bicycle courier who previously awoke from a coma to find that the “Rage Virus” had destroyed London. He also serves as executive producer.
The upcoming sequel will also star Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jody Comer, Jack O’Connell, Erin Kelliman and Edwin Riding.
Garland previously offered some insight into the film’s theme. He shared, “It’s about the passage of time and thinking about what effect the passage of time would have.”
He added: “Is this what you would traditionally call a post-apocalyptic state? Or has something else started to manifest? Time is really at the heart of the engine of the film.”
When previously teasing the third film, Garland said, “I have a really great idea for it, but it’s a much bigger movie and one of the things about 28 days later is that it was small and punk and this idea is less small and punk.”
The movie stars Jody Comer, Cillian Murphy, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jack O’Connelland Ralph Fiennes . The miracles director Nia DaCosta is in talks to direct the second film.
28 years later arrives in theaters on June 20, 2025 from Sony. The film was previously reported to have been shot on an iPhone 15 Pro.
