In a statement Monday, police allege that in March, while he was on call for duty, an officer failed to offer medical aid or first aid to a person in medical distress.

The victim was left in the care of a family member who later received medical attention.

The person was taken to hospital and released.

“Durham Region Police Service maintains accountability with supervisory oversight that includes proactive reviews of calls for service. During one of these examinations, an investigation into the alleged crime was initiated,” the police statement said.

Const. James Wright, a 23-year-old member of the Durham police, is charged with failure to provide the necessities of life.

He was released on bail and suspended with pay.
