Time to go back means it’s also time to check those smoke alarms
Also, the time to set your clocks back to Daylight Saving Time is a great time to make sure your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors are working.
This Thursday night is the traditional trick-or-treat night across Northern Nevada, but bring your coats and an umbrella – the forecast calls for a chance of rain this week, including on Halloween.
Luckily, we’ll have more time to sleep after the Halloween candy debacle. Clocks will return to standard time early Sunday morning, with clocks set back from 2am to 1am on November 3.

Halloween House Reno, through November 2: This all-ages Halloween attraction is billed as “spooky, not scary” — in other words, no jump scares. Dark Corner Haunted House, through November 2: This fascinating haunted house is aimed at the older set. Located at the National Bowling Alley, 300 N. Center St. in Reno. Halloween in the Children’s Office, October 30: The Wilbur D. May Youth Center at 777 Sinclair St. in Reno will host an all-ages event, including interactive games. The event runs from 3 to 6 p.m. For details, visit facebook.com/childrenscabinet.
Spooky Date Night, October 30: In addition to a haunted car tour, this event at the National Automobile Museum includes a haunted photo booth and a screening of the original Beetlejuice in the museum’s theater. Hauntober Parade and Safe Trick-or-Treating, October 31: Virginia City wraps up its festivities with a parade down C Street, in which anyone in costume can participate — kids, adults, even pets. Roadworks in Northern Nevada, Oct. 28-Nov. 3
I-80, West Reno: Lane reductions and overnight ramp closures will continue as part of a multi-year project to repave and improve the stretch of freeway between West McCarran and Keystone. Expect lane changes and speed reductions.Lakeside Drive, Holcomb Ranch Lane and West Huffaker Lane, Reno: Alley and road closures will be in place through late fall as the Nevada Department of Transportation works to resurface 3 1/2 miles of State Route 671. Expect closures of up to 30 minutes.
Steamboat Parkway, South Reno: Crews will widen Steamboat Parkway from four lanes to six between Marketplace Drive and Veterans Parkway by November.
US 395, North Valleys: Northbound traffic will continue to be reduced to two lanes on 395 until mid-2025 due to NDOT’s work to widen 395 between North McCarran Boulevard and Golden Valley Road. The ramp at Panther Valley, north of Reno, will be closed until the end of 2024. Watch for intermittent ramp closures at night.
