San Bernardino County Deputy Sheriff Michael Castaneda was recently recognized for rescuing a child from an SUV stuck on train tracks in Redlands, California. The incident captured in a video shared on social media, shows Castaneda sprinting towards the vehicle, which is stuck on the tracks, as a train approaches at high speed.
He worked quickly to reach the SUV and retrieve the child just seconds before the train collided with the vehicle. His actions averted what could have been a tragic accident as he was able to get himself and the child to safety just before the train hit the jeep.
The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department awarded Castaneda with the Meritorious Service Award for Courage and Quick Response. The department praised his courage on social media, describing his actions as “a true example of courage and commitment to our community.”
