AMHERST COUNTY, Va. (WSET) — Officials have released more information about the fatal crash that left one person dead in Madison Heights Saturday afternoon.
ABC13 previously reported the crash, which happened around 2 p.m. According to Virginia State Police, a car crashed into a utility pole on Possum Island Road, killing one person in the crash.
In an update Monday morning, VSP gave more details about what happened.

“A 2024 Kia Forte was traveling southbound on Possum Island Road heading toward the intersection with Millennium Way when the Forte lost control, went off the right side of the road, struck a mailbox and then a utility pole,” VSP said . “Forte then rolled over.”
Police said a 16-year-old boy was a passenger in the vehicle and was thrown from the car before he died at the scene. The VSP said he was not wearing a seat belt.
The driver of the car was identified by VSP as 34-year-old Lucas S. Fretwell. Officials said Fretwell suffered minor injuries in the crash and was also not wearing a seat belt.
“Charges are pending,” VSP said, before adding that the crash was still under investigation.
