A Durham police officer has been charged with a felony after allegedly failing to provide medical aid to a man in distress.
Police say the officer was attending a call for service in March when the alleged incident occurred.
Authorities say the officer did not provide medical treatment to the person and instead left them in the care of a family member.
The person was then taken to hospital for treatment and later released.
Durham Police say the incident was flagged following a regular proactive review of calls for service.
Durham Regional Police’s Professional Standards Unit then launched a formal investigation, leading to the criminal charge.
Const. James Wright, a 23-year veteran of the force, is accused of failing to provide the necessities of life.
He is currently suspended with pay.
