Baton Rouge, La. (WAFB) – Sources in the Department of Correction told WAFB I -team that a prisoner who was taken to the Virgin Mary Hospital from the Lake over the weekend was dressed in a bulletproof vest center for a correction center three days before and in his bag was A knife found.

Leon Rufin was sentenced to life imprisonment in October 2024 for murder in Jefferson’s parish. It is well known to law enforcement agencies in the New Orleans area.

Last year, investigators said he had falsified a disease to go to Ochsner Hospital. As he was leaving the car to Jefferson’s parish sherry, he sprayed his alternate and drove in a deputy’s car. The hospital monitoring video showed the escape and what was unfolding.

Rufin was seized in a motel in New Orleans East.

“We have had a lot of help from many different people in the last two days,” Jefferson Joe Lopinto’s parish sheriff said at the time. “Local agencies, whether themselves, the parish of St. Bernard, St. Charles or Orleans, all our federal partners. Everything was on the deck for the development of information and people and everything in between. “

Sources said Rufin had emergency medical attention over the weekend and was taken to the Virgin Mary from Lake Rouge Lake. When he reached the hospital, a cat scan revealed that he had an unknown object in his body. Investigators said they had found a home knife in his bag, and when he was stripped of and searched at the hospital, he was dressed in the bulletproof vest, which was reported to have disappeared on February 5, 2025.

Sources said I-Team Wafb began asking questions about this prisoner, his tactical teams were appointed to make sure he did not get out.

The Deputy Secretary of the Ministry of Amendments issued the following statement:

“The Ministry of Public Safety and Corrections is aware that on 02.08.2025 an incident happened, including a prisoner of the Elayn Hunt correction, which was transported to the Virgin Mary Hospital.” This issue is currently under investigation. “

Late on Wednesday night, sources told WAFB I-Team that Rufin was no longer in the Virgin Mary Hospital from the lake. He is again in the arrest of the Louisiana Amendment Division.
