WSDOT camera for capture speeds near construction work areas – FOX 13 Seattle

Washington is an average of more than 1,300 crashes in the construction work area every year, according to the State Department of Transport in Washington. WSDOT staff said the speed was leading is a leading cause of the construction work area crashes, sometimes ending from death or critical injuries.

On Wednesday, WSDOT and Washington State Patrol launched the new camera for the speed of the work area for the protection of state workers and the traveling audience.

“These cameras are for everyone’s safety,” said Julie Meredith, secretary of transport. “Too many workers are killed or injured, and statistics show that drivers are not slow.”

By the numbers:

When the system officially launches at the end of February, the cameras will be mounted on a trailer and rotate through active work areas throughout the country.

The cameras will find exceeded cars, take pictures of the registration plates and mark the location, time, date and published speed. The information will go to the State Patrol to review the images. If investigators believe there is a violation, they will send a ticket to the registered owner of the vehicle.

Meredith explained that the first crime was not priced.

“But then every violation will cost you $ 248. Each dollar received maintains the price of the program. The funds will be used for safety programs and DUI patrols from Washington Patrol,” Meredith said.

Meredith said that this program could not come at an ancient moment for the safety of Washington’s path, as clashes and injuries are increasing.

Why you should be interested:

“In the first 10 months of 2024, where we have statistics, we have 42 work area crashes that kill or seriously injured people. And this is more than we had in everyone in 2023,” Meredith said.

Signs will be placed that approach the work area to warn drivers to slow down.

The camera system is from Elovate, a company that specializes in automated traffic implementation solutions. Representatives of the company said the camera system was a worthy investment to increase safety. The representative said, “Everywhere we put these systems, we had a reduction in speeds.”

What’s next:

One camera will work at the end of the month. WSDOT will add two more cameras in the spring and expand to six in the summer. Officials said the goal is to work 15 cameras by 2027, rotating in different work areas where speed is a constant problem.
