Surprisingly, some people can’t conceptualize how big Lake Michigan is – 98.7 Grand

Most local Michigans receive it in nature, the Great Lakes are large. Like really big. Huge inner seas – the largest concentration of fresh water on Earth – 20 percent of the large water on the planet.

But if you are not a native of the Great Lakes region, can you really find out how big the big lakes are – or a lake – actually?

The question appeared on a Facebook group dedicated to Google Earth, structures and anomalies recently when someone asked about the development of a bridge through Lake Michigan.

The publication shows a map showing a distance from driving from Saugatuk, Michigan to the south along the lake around northwestern Indiana in Chicagoland with a route ending in Milwaukee. The drive is just shy at 4 1/2 hours, traveling 219 miles.

So, would the bridge?

If someone has been from another part of the country, it may seem possible. In the end, those in Louisiana would be aware of the cause through Lake Pontchartrane north of New Orleans. This bridge is 23 miles long. Unlike the potential bridge of Lake Michigan, Causeway descends low to the water as there is no supply of traffic like the Great Lakes.

Or some may point to the bridge of the Chesapike Bridge in Virginia. Running north from the beach of Virginia to the Delmarva Peninsula, which cover the bridge and tunnels, passing 17 miles with the tunnel part, which allows the passage of sea vessels.

Or our neighbors north in Canada will probably quickly point to the Confederation Bridge. This period of 8 miles takes drivers over the open and often frozen waters of the Nortumberland Strait and connects Prince Edward Island to the continental part.

But none of these bridges would match the scope of a span necessary to cross Lake Michigan. As a narrow place in the lake, say the silver lake in Michigan near Ludington to Sheboyan in Wisconsin is 58 miles away.

Makinak’s bridge is the most famous Michigan bridge and covers a sparrow 5 miles above the largest point in the Makinak Strait.

There are numerous reasons why the passage of Lake Michigan is likely to be practically impossible beyond the clean distance:

• The amount of drilling to attach the bridge in the deepest parts of the lake
• Interruption of transport sails
• Wind
• Winter ice
• There are no islands in the lake south of the maniatures to provide some stops for mooring or resting

Oh, and the price.

There are two ferries that are provided through the lake. One departure from Ludington and another from Muscuggon.

So we will probably never have the opportunity to drive from Michigan to Wisconsin through our own majestic mighty Micha Bridge.
