Just days after the announcement of his candidacy, the former state cashier says he is withdrawing from politics

Charleston, SC – former South Carolina state cashier, Thomas Ravnell canceled the course on a potential political return, announcing that he would not run for governor in 2026 after previously announced his candidacy last week.

The 62 -year -old Ravnel made a message on social media on Tuesday night, pointing to his responsibilities as a lonely father to three young children as the main reason to withdraw from the race.

“It is more important to raise my family than to seek a political position,” writes Ravenel on X, the platform known as Twitter.

No one else has officially announced to be held the governor, although recently the US reputation Nancy Mace told reporters that he was considering an offer. The current governor, Henry McMaster, cannot work again because of the limits of the country’s time.

Ravenel, a Republican, last held a public office in 2007, before resigning as a state cashier only months after his term, having pleaded guilty to federal drug charges. Previously, he runs unsuccessfully for the GOP nomination for the US Senate in 2004, and in 2014 he ran for an independent service.

He later gained national attention as a member of the cast in the reality TV series Southern Char, a Bravo Channel show, chronicling from time to time a scandalous life of the well-made inhabitants of Charleston.

Ravenel is the scion of a prominent family in the low side of South Carolina, which has been tracing its roots for generations. His father Arthur Ravnel, Jr., was a long -time state legislator and US representative from Charleston. The Arthur Ravenel Bridge, Jr., the large structure connecting the center of Charleston to the Plezant Mountain over the Cooper River, is called in his honor.
