Utah soon can generate energy with nuclear energy – public radio in Utah

With increasing demand from data centers and artificial intelligence presenting unique energy challenges, Utah explores more creative solutions, including nuclear energy, to meet its energy needs. Representative Carl Albrecht, a Republican of Richfield, is the main sponsor of HB 249, a bill on nuclear energy changes.

“So this started as a Nuclear Nuclear Energy Study Energy Study Facility, set up a frame, if you will, how to get there … But in the end it was a structure for all the electricity in the country, whether they are new Gas installation, battery storage, wind, solar energy, large transmission lines, geothermal, this is a really state number, “said Albrecht.

The bill outlines the creation of the Utah Energy Council, which will monitor the development of energy projects and manage an investment fund for the development of energy. It also includes the establishment of the Energy Council Advisory Board and a Nuclear Energy Consortium, which will provide experience in nuclear energy and safety.

“I think people, after going through the next 10, 12 years of use of coal and gas, that people are quite excited, honestly, for small nuclear reactors or even something a little more in Utah,” Albrecht said.

The future of nuclear energy in Utah is still evolving and at the moment Utah is not generating electricity from nuclear energy according to the energy information administration.

“I think you know that when done right, nuclear energy is incredibly safe and efficient. And that’s why I don’t see many reasons to worry about it, “said William Wright.

Wright is a student at Utah State University, who said he loves nuclear energy, especially because of her sustainable character.

“I know we have a fairly fast -growing population and this can lead to a lot of energy consumption and increase energy prices. But I want to say, one thing I don’t think you can really have too much is energy. So, until you know, this is delivered or produced in a safe, effective way, then I’m all about it, “Wright said.

The bill has accepted the chamber and is in the Senate for consideration.
