Why do we celebrate George Washington in Laredo – KGNS

Laredo, Texas (KGNS) – Festivities for the Annual Birthday Celebration Association of Washington (WBCA) are underway with several events that are already in the books.

Although this is a tradition in which the city of Laredo has been involved in more than 100 years, many still do not know why we are celebrating George Washington.

This is a tradition that dates back to February 22, 1898, when root Americans and white men dealt with a battle to control Laredo in the mayoralty, without success or effect.

In the end, the mayor at that time presented the key to the city of the Great Chief Shaem as a sign of unconditional broadcast, and the chief presented the key to Princess Pocahontas.

The original committee was looking for a traditional holiday to celebrate, which could offer the best of all cultures, influencing the heritage of Laredo’s citizens, and thus settled on George Washington.

This celebration gave birth to George Washington’s annual birthday celebration, which has become an approximate two-month celebration of family events that include Run George Run 5K and the Anheuser-Busch birthday parade in Washington.

The WBCA, Nino Cardenas auxiliary director, believes that the festivities celebrate patriotism in our community every year.

Noting: “We wanted to celebrate a historical figure that embodies what this country is about, and to be the first president, the father of the country to better celebrate by George Washington? At the end of the day we do it because it is a love for our country. We want to show everyone what Laredo can offer and welcome everyone to enter and enjoy and have fun with us. “

Carddas added that after the festivities are over, the five employees immediately start working on the festivities next year.

Over the years, there have been several new events such as Red White and BBQ Cookhave and Family Fun Fen Fest on Laredo College.

When we asked Larendoans why we were celebrating our founders, some admitted that they did not know why we were celebrating it, but said they were expecting events every year.

In a separate article we will hear from community members about their thoughts about the festivities.
