Laurie Apps, a valued member of the Houghton Lake community, passed away following a sudden stroke on Saturday, October 19th. Laurie, known for her unwavering dedication to her family and her career as a caregiver, leaves behind a legacy of resilience, compassion and boundless love.
Throughout her life, Laurie bravely faced enormous challenges. In 2006, her second son was in a coma for several months after a near-fatal car accident. Lori dedicated herself to his recovery, helping him return to a fully functional life. She then continued her work as a registered nurse until 2010, when her oldest son, a war veteran, was diagnosed with terminal cancer at just 26 years old. Guided by her motto of “hope, not hospice,” Lori helped her son find strength and greatly extended his life, a testament to her enduring hope and determination.
In addition to these family trials, Lori also suffered the losses of her younger brother and her mother, a series of tragedies that would weigh heavily on anyone. Despite the personal damage, she continued to care for others, often at the expense of her own well-being.
Michael Stowell set up a fundraising fund to cover Lori’s memorial service and end-of-life expenses, as she had no life insurance or financial provisions to alleviate these final expenses. The family welcomes any support to honor Lori’s life and her selfless commitment to others.
Our heartfelt condolences go out to Laurie’s family. Our thoughts and prayers are with them at this difficult time.
