Health Fair at Mexico Consulate in Las Vegas, offering free medical services – FOX 5 Las Vegas

Las Vegas, Nev. (FOX5) – Dozens of people packed the Mexico Consulate in Las Vegas on Tuesday, not for passports or legal documents, but for healthcare.

The Free Health Fair, hosted in partnership with non -profit, provided basic medical services, including health examinations, vaccinations and eye exams.

For many events present, they offer their only opportunity to see a doctor.

“This is a good option for us to come and get information about resources available to people with low -incomes or families like ours who do not have health insurance,” said participant Maria Soto in Spanish.

Nevada is home to about 160,000 undocumented people. As they do not meet Medicaid requirements and cannot buy health insurance through the affordable care market, their healthcare opportunities are limited.

“The most important part of this event is that people can stop to and on a single visit, check their blood pressure, glucose levels, receive eye exams and check their teeth,” said React Luis Director Aceves in Spanish.

Some present had not seen a doctor for years. The organizers of the events said a woman had been taken to the emergency room after screening revealed dangerously high blood pressure.

There is an effort to expand access to healthcare, including a recent impetus, to allow DACA recipients to enroll in ACA coverage, but for the undocumented community the options remain limited.

“As Spaniards, we tend to leave our health in the last place in our priorities and it is very important to be aware of what we should take care of ourselves and our families,” says Consul on Lourdoga Community.

The consulate of Mexico in Las Vegas and Reach will continue to host these health fairs every second Tuesday of the month from 10am to 1pm.
