Freeze Freeze can make more difficult fires in the fight with Nevada, Rosen warns – Reno Gazette Journal

The Reno Fire Chief says that freezing funding affecting seasonal firefighters will mean more slow, lighter answers that can allow the “fire to overtake us”

President Donald Trump’s funding may mean less firefighters on the first lines of wild fires this year.

Congress offices have been reported that federal hiring stop includes seasonal firefighters. Nevada Senator Jackie Rosen recorded 14 other democratic senators in raising an alarm in a letter sent on Tuesday to the Trump administration.

“We are extremely concerned about hearing that this is happening in the US Forest Service, the Land Management Bureau and the National Park before what is expected to be another devastating year of fire,” the letter said.

Renault David Cochi’s fire chief estimates that seasonal federal firefighters make up 20% of Earth boots for large fires.

“If the freezing hire is applied to these seasonal firefighters that the federals hire, then you take out a large piece of the ability to respond to these large -scale incidents such as Davis’s fire,” he told RGJ.

Davis’s fire south of Reno burned more than 6,000 acres, 11 homes and a church in September.

Rosen’s letter said that the release of public safety staff was provided, but not for seasonal firefighters.

“We are horrified that federal seasonal firefighters are no longer released, given the critical role they play in public safety in our communities,” the statement said.

“Although there is an urgent need to hire more federal firefighters, the hiring of the Trump administration freezes the opposite and stops hiring at a critical moment for this already shortly labor.”

The letter was sent to the Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, the current secretary of the US Department of Agriculture Gary Washington and the current director of the US staff office Charles Ezel.

Other signators included Nevada Senator Catherine Cortez Masto and Sens Mark Kelly of Arizona, John Hyckeloper of Colorado, Alex Padila of California, Martin Heinrich of New Mexico and Ron Wyden and Jeffrey Merkli of Oregon.

Freeze is also associated with the effort to mitigate the fire

In another letter sent on Monday to Burgum and Washington, Cortez Masto, Rosen and other Western senators criticized reports that federal fuel reduction projects were stopped.

“One of the most effective strategies to reduce (fire) the risk is to reduce the dangerous natural fuels that surround our communities,” the letter said.

“These fuel reduction projects save lives and property, reduce the danger to firefighters, and bring our lands back into a fire adapted ecosystem, which can better withstand the threat to human life, communities, infrastructure and ownership. By terminating or even pausing these projects, all progress made in the protection of these communities is at risk. “

How would you freeze when hiring seasonal firefighters to affect a large fire Nevada?

Crowy said that if a big fire in the Renault or Lake Tahoe Lake, there is no funding for federal seasonal firefighters, it will probably cause more and more damage.

“As for the Renault Fire Service and the Fire as a whole in North Nevada, no entity in the fire service is able to manage and soften the large -scale fires we recently had – all the time all the time,” he said.

He could only speculate on the impact of freezing federal seasonal firefighters, he said because this had not happened before.

“When you have a large-scale incident, you are extracting all the resources available as close as possible,” Cohni said. “If you remove the federal piece from this, it means that we need to dig deeper into the resource pool.”

He expects that “probably” enough resources will eventually be unfolded.

“But,” he said, “they will take more time to get there, it will cost more to get them, and the overall ability to react will be weakened. This allows the fire to outstrip us.”

He noted that all firefighters, regardless of where it was supposed to work only for two weeks and could receive a release for an extra third week, but then they need to be removed to rest and recover.

At one point, he said, a limit on the number of people who can respond will be affected.

“If it was, when there were no federal seasonal firefighters,” said Cochkra, “This hole will be filled by local agencies and ultimately you are running out of resources.”

Fire Resources Policy

Although Rosen’s letter was signed only by democratic senators, Crozni hopes that he is not regarded as a Democrat against the Republican thing.

“The fire – really every disaster – should not be a political issue,” he said. “This will affect everyone, regardless of policy, so these impacts will pass political lines, so this should be important to everyone.”

Rosen’s letter also noted the possibility of a policy violating fire efforts.

“Administration should not sacrifice the safety of the American people in favor of applying a political agenda,” the statement said. “We urge you to turn the course immediately, start hiring again and get on seasonal firefighters and continue to support and cultivate the federal fire force.”
