At the head coaching meetings this September in Chicago, the NBA made it clear that the new emphasis isn’t going away, according to Michael Malone. “I feel like the overall theme of that meeting was, ‘We hope it’s more like what we saw after the All-Star break,'” he said. “Which doesn’t mean they won’t call fouls. But we’ll let the teams play a little more. You have coaches like (Warriors and Team USA coach) Steve Kerr, who has played and coached in the Olympics, and they always talk about how FIBA, in general, is a much more physical game than the NBA. So I think they’re trying to get to a point where — and the refs are doing the best job they can — but kind of understanding, “OK, how do we create the flow of the game, let the guys play?” Offensively, players are always trying to game the system. So how do we not allow offensive linemen to game the system more?”
