Zoo Boise mourns the loss of a 14-year-old red panda-ktvb.com

Boise, the Idaho-Zopark Boise on Tuesday announced Spud, his “favorite” 14-year-old male red panda, died.

Spud joined Zoo Boise in 2018, eight years after he was born at the Potawatomi Zoo in Indiana. The officials said he immediately influenced the guests in the city of trees with his curious nature and playful personality.

The 14-year-old Red Panda has received specialized attention throughout her life as one of the oldest animals of the species in a zoo accredited by the Aza. There are 237 institutions accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums as of September 2024.

Zoo Boise said Spud was euthanized after a recent decline in his health due to age -related problems.

“The loss of this incredible animal is felt by all employees, volunteers and visitors to Zoo Boise, as he was an incredible ambassador of his species,” said Boise Parks and Recreation Doug Holloway. “We appreciate community support during this difficult time.”

Spud gave birth to several cubes and contributed “to the future of its species” as part of the Red Panda survival plan, according to Zoo Boise. Officials also said he played a vital role in the conservation, education and protection of Red Panda.

Those who want to honor Spud’s memory are asked to share their favorite moments with Zoo Boise through a card, comment or message.

“I am grateful for the respect that our care team has for every animal called Zoo Boise Home,” said zoo director Boise Gene Peacock. “Goodbye is never easy, but we will be forever grateful for the impact of a trigger on Boyz, the Valley of Treasures and Idaho.”
